PLWA congratulates and thanks Peggy Juchli, the Beach Captains and all the 84 volunteers from around Pigeon Lake who participated in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup on behalf of the Pigeon Lake Stewards.
This fall eighty-four volunteers from around Pigeon Lake once again participated in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This is the sixth year that stewards from our lake participated in this national and international event. To find more information about the program please visit the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup website. An astounding 11,453.45 pounds of litter and debris has been removed over six years.
Results related to litter around Pigeon Lake are generally the same as previous years. The highest amount of litter and debris was found in areas with the most public access or downwind for such areas. The majority of tires, abandoned boat hoists and other heavy items have been removed although a few remain. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of plastic flagging scraps which are particularly harmful to waterfowl.
The increased strategic placement of covered garbage cans and 'butt boxes' have helped a lot. Thank you to the Counties, Summer Villages and local restaurants who have taken this initiative.
This year several volunteers monitored and cleared litter all summer long and added their results to the fall totals. Many individuals and municipal staff were diligent in keeping their space clean throughout the summer months. All this supports the main goals of the GCSC- keeping our beaches safe for all creatures and educating the general public regarding the negative effects of some human behaviours.
